FAM-L Bargaining, Day 13

Today at FAM-L bargaining, our negotiating team worked to protect librarians’ promotion, tenure, and evaluation process and advocate for more manageable workloads.

Meanwhile, management presented “solutions” that miss the realities of librarians’ day-to-day work — promotion procedures that put librarians’ progress at risk; arguing that service and scholarship don’t count as part of day-to-day work (though both are required for promotion); and claiming that reducing the dossier page-count is enough to lighten librarians’ untenable workloads.

Management also presented a dangerously broad furlough policy that would allow them to furlough virtually at will if there is a “reduction in the operating budget.” Our proposal would protect librarians with a range of procedures that must first be completed before reductions in pay or benefits.

On the bright side, we have tentatively agreed to an MOU assuring that our contract will apply to all FAM-L members, including those not currently covered by the Libraries Appointment, Rank and Promotion System (LARPS).

The FAM team continues to negotiate in good faith for solutions that will be a win for both librarians and the university.
