FAM win on summer pay!

It PAYS to be in a union

We have an update on management’s unilateral changes to the timing of your summer pay (not the amount) for faculty teaching during the summer terms. After the University refused to bargain over these changes, we filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge with the State Employment Relations Board (SERB), which opened an independent investigation into the matter. Within two days of filing that ULP, management reached out with a settlement offer. We agreed to the settlement last week.

This is a win for FAM on two fronts: first, we showed management that they may not make unilateral changes to our pay without negotiating with us first. Second, the settlement means that YOU get paid earlier. Most members who were supposed to be paid at the end of May will now be paid by today (June 22); you may have seen this payment post last week. Management has also adjusted the remainder of the summer pay schedule so that our members get paid earlier than they would have otherwise.

This is FAM’s second win on summer pay — our first being in 2023 when the implementation of Workday delayed everyone’s pay at the university except for members of our bargaining unit.

The payment may have been retroactive to May, but June deductions were taken so that the net pay was tiny. And now I have no idea what to expect on 30 June. Murkier than ever!
