Today we submitted a formal comment on proposed federal regulation OMB-2026-0034 which would radically change how federal funding for science works in the United States. This proposal would change how federal grants work across the government leading to increased political interference, banning certain topics, and even allow federal agencies to cancel grants at any time if they deem them no longer to be a priority. Because of how wide reaching the changes are there has been unified opposition from higher education. The American Association of Universities has written about how destructive OMB-2026-0034 would be for higher education and has submitted a comment asking for additional time to respond given the large number of changes proposed. The American Academy for the Advancement of Science and the American Association of University Professors (one of our parent unions) have both released statements in response.
FAM has submitted the below letter in response to the proposed rulemaking. If you are not familiar, federal agencies have to provide time for public comment when promulgating changes to federal rules. They then must respond to these rules in their final decision. If you believe there are important things that need to be addressed that we missed please submit your own comment here. You can also ask the academic societies you are part of to make comments.
