How to support non-tenure-track faculty at department level

We’ve just shared an important document with all chairs and program directors at Miami: Supporting NTT Faculty: Considerations for Departments and Programs. Please talk to your departmental leadership and ask that it be discussed. Non-tenure-track faculty across all divisions and ranks were involved in the development of “Supporting NTT Faculty.” It addresses essential issues affecting non-tenure track faculty such as due process, inclusion, enfranchisement, and access to information.

Structural issues continue to constrain economic security and academic freedom for non-tenure-track faculty—especially the fact that they can be terminated without cause. But smaller changes at department level could, in the meantime, make a real difference to the working lives of non-tenure-line faculty.

We will continue to advocate for structural changes to promote economic security and academic freedom for NTT. To that end, please sign our petition to update Miami’s Principles of Academic Freedom, and ask your Miami senator to follow up on spring’s vote to form a committee to make recommendations about the faculty composition best suited to Miami’s academic mission. (Senate Executive Committee has not yet decided to implement the committee. Continued attention and advocacy from senators will help ensure that it gets formed.)

Thanks for your support!
