We are sorry to report that SB 83 passed out of committee this morning and could go to the House floor soon. This bill is a true threat to student education, academic freedom, and faculty livelihoods. It is so unpopular — over 700 testimonies and tens of thousands of letters in opposition since March — that its supporters had to turn to undemocratic maneuvers to get it through committee.
This is not over. The bill may not reach the floor. Speaker Stephens, who would move it there, has not so far been supportive of it. But he could change his mind and the pressure to do so will be fierce. In the meantime, let’s talk our House representatives out of voting for it.
What you can do:
1) Calls are powerful. Call these legislators today to demand that they STOP SB 83 from passing the Ohio House:
- House Speaker @JasonCStephens, Rep93@OhioHouse.gov, 614-466-1366
- Your State House Representative — find your Rep by typing your address below these maps: https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/members/district-maps, or if you’re in Oxford or Hamilton, call Rep. Sara Carruthers (614) 644-6721
- Governor Mike DeWine — tell him to veto SB 83 if it reaches his desk! (614) 644-4357
