FAM-L Bargaining, Day 12

Today at FAM-L bargaining, management made clear that they will continue to chip away at shared governance and job security for librarians at Miami. While FAM’s proposals aim to improve working conditions for librarians, management is proposing to erode the rights and protections that librarians currently have.

For example, management’s proposal on Promotion and Continuing Contract (which you can read in full at our Proposal Tracker) would completely change the process for how dossiers are assembled and submitted. They responded to librarians’ workload crisis (remember that management said we should be prepared to work 75 hours a week) by proposing that we limit our promotion dossier to 10 pages, while offering no actual workload relief. In their counter-proposal on the Personnel Committee, they proposed to take away our right to elect members to that committee, suggesting that the dean could allow that if he deigned, but it was up to him. And they suggested, in their proposal on Credit Bearing Courses, that these courses would not count at all toward a candidate’s promotion. These are all changes to current practice that would set Miami librarians backward.

As the day closed, the librarians signed an article on Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment. It will ensure all university policies and state/federal laws that protect our members will be grievable under the contract.

Show management we will not give up our current rights and protections. Come to bargaining next Friday, April 5th (location TBA). Wear FAM swag. And sign a commitment card if you haven’t already!
