Today at the table, management offered a new Artificial Intelligence Memo of Understanding (MOU), a response to our AI proposal which would require both parties to discuss AI’s impact on our work. This is a positive first step, since management had initially refused to bargain over AI at all. If we reach agreement on this, it will be the first of its kind for Ohio higher ed!
They also countered on Discipline and Discharge and presented two counters concerning leaves (including Assigned Research Appointments and Faculty Improvement Leaves). They are offering us only 15 sick days per year total, with no accruals—a regression from current policy which would make Miami a less attractive place to work. When FAM asked, “what if I get a cancer diagnosis? Does that mean I only get 15 days paid sick leave total?” Their answer was yes, that is their proposal.
FAM’s negotiating team asked pointed questions about management’s bare-bones Benefits proposal (presented at our last session), pushing management to include vision insurance in their proposal and forcing them to say that they want the power to change our benefits at any time without negotiating with us. We obviously will not stand for that. We also countered on Outside Employment, protecting our members’ rights to work outside of Miami.
You can review all proposals and counters at our website! And we welcome you to get a detailed inside perspective on the bargaining process by attending negotiations. We bargain again next Wednesday, May 22, at Demske Staff Development Center (424 Wells Mill Road, Oxford).
