Our first negotiations of the summer were red-hot — we proposed four counters, including one that would clarify how faculty can be evaluated and one strengthening the job protections of TCPL faculty. Importantly, we vehemently re-rejected management’s language creating a new, unnecessary, and punitive post-tenure review process. We countered on discipline and discharge, and we also grilled management on their proposals from last time concerning academic and personal leaves.
In our Q&A on sick leave, it became clear that management does not intend to provide faculty with adequate coverage in the event of a serious or long-term illness. When pressed at the table today and last week, they provided two totally different examples of accrued sick leave being supposedly abused by faculty as a justification for capping sick leave at 15 days annually, with no accruals at all — a departure from current policy and practice. When we asked them how often accrued sick leave is abused, they couldn’t answer.
We will continue to push for strong benefits and job protections for our members. In their counters presented today, management came closer to our language in Outside Employment and Professional Activities, Appointments, and Appointment and Promotion of T/TT Faculty. You can read all proposals and counters in full at our website!
