A Win for FAM on Timely Summer Pay!

As a result of FAM’s demands that faculty teaching summer courses be paid in full and according to the usual schedule, and that any faculty still owed payment from June be made whole, we’re happy to report that most faculty were fully paid on July 31. [Update: as of August 23, at least some non-union faculty, including chairs, had still not been paid for summer work — a testament to the power of a union.]

This is a win for FAM, who pressured management to do the right thing and not to make excuses for missed or delayed payroll. And it’s a win for FAM faculty, who wrote in large numbers and gave us documentation and evidence of the problem.

However, we are still looking into one or two cases in which faculty were not paid in full as of yesterday, as well as a stipend issue affecting 23 instructors that management has subsequently agreed (at our insistence) to rectify by the end of the week. Please let us know if you are missing payment that was due to you on or before July 31, so we can advocate for you!

We are also still looking into the issue of missing summer contracts. We understand that it is unnerving to teach without a signed contract, and even those faculty who have been paid have not always received contracts. We will reach out with more information when we have this matter resolved.

As this win shows, one of the benefits of union membership is that we can advocate for our members as a collective, rather than each of us needing to advocate individually to make the university do the right thing. There is strength and power in numbers! And it’s this kind of collective action that will win us a great contract! If you’re not yet a member, join today.
