Long-running community programs in the city of Oxford and beyond are being put at risk by Miami leadership’s stance in negotiations with the Faculty Alliance of Miami. Programs on President Crawford’s chopping block include:
- Programming for retirees
- Fun community events
- Kids’ programming
- Programming on diversity and inclusion
- Public lectures
For over a year and a half, Miami librarians have been bargaining to win just compensation, transparent, consistent promotion policies and fair workloads. Now, management are saying that public work is outside the scope of librarian duties.
If management is able to win on this point, librarian services to our local community — work librarians value and love — will end or be radically diminished.
As a nonprofit corporation, Miami University pays no taxes. Yet Miami benefits enormously from its location in the beautiful, vibrant city of Oxford. Community involvement enriches the university both financially and culturally. Miami should give back to our community.
Traditionally, Miami has paid an important part of its dues to the Oxford community through the public work Miami university librarians do. Now, that could end.
If you want to see Miami’s community programming continue, call President Greg Crawford now at 529-2345 and ask why he’s not supporting Miami librarians.
Consider also sending a letter to President Crawford and chief financial officer David Creamer. Click here to send. You can edit the letter to ask why they do not want their librarians to provide programming to our local community.
