Miami’s concerning new workload policy

You may already be aware that Miami management has created new workload evaluation standards and procedures for tenure-line and TCPL faculty that they have shared with chairs. A new rubric — which chairs have been asked to speedily complete before the end of the semester — raises expectations for research, scholarship, and creative activity, and faculty who do not meet those increased expectations will be expected to teach more.

While Ohio labor law prevents us from bargaining over workload, FAM is gathering information about this change, including where the new metrics come from and how they might impact bargainable issues (promotion and tenure, annual evaluations, and more). We are also speaking with our legal team about possible responses.

Meanwhile, we are asking you to review the workload evaluation document and talk to your department chair about how they are responding to it. Any information you can provide to us about your department’s and/or chair’s response and how this will impact your job will be helpful to us as we consider options. Please fill out this form or contact your department liaison to share what you find out.

Thank you for your help! As always, we’re stronger together.

The new workload policy, which is completely out of line with the amount of research support the university is willing to offer, should also be considered in the context of the ever-increasing minimum class size. From ridiculously stingy compensation offers to new demands to teach more and produce more research, the university is squeezing us from all sides.

This is very worrisome for morale and may depress productivity. It’s particularly problematic for the humanities.

As BGSU and KSU go, so goes Miami. Why? Miami is supposed to be an aspirational school. We should not give up our identity. So many have labored so hard on its behalf.
