On the first day of classes, January 27, let’s get out in the street and demand that Miami management stop freezing us out. Show your strength, FAM!
What: “Don’t Freeze Us Out!” Practice Picket* 🪧. Wear anything red you have over your jacket (use your FAM tee as a scarf!)
When: Monday, January 27, 12:30–1:30pm
Where: Meet at Shriver patio (corner of Spring and Maple opposite Armstrong).
Miami management have stalled on negotiations for over 500 days now and faculty and librarians are frustrated. Management will come to the table only twice per month and their team is rarely ready when they do. Recently, management’s lawyer was replaced because she was criminally indicted. Now, a third lawyer has taken over as chief negotiator and needs to be brought up to speed, wasting time and energy. Worse, management is refusing to come to reasonable positions on compensation, job security for faculty, and academic freedom for librarians.
Escalating pressure from membership has been essential in getting movement at the table. FAM has won some important concessions (on AI, librarian workload, promotion and tenure, and more) because over half of our membership turned out in 2024 for bargaining or for actions. Almost 100 turned out for our December 13 Board of Trustees action, which was covered in multiple local papers and resulted in important wins for our librarian unit.
Your participation and union membership are your leverage for winning material benefits for yourself and your colleagues. (Also, joining the FAM crowd at actions is fun!)
