Today is our 510th day of bargaining for our first contract. Read our op-ed in the Oxford Free Press, where we argue that lengthy contract negotiations are a union-busting tactic. You deserve a fair contract now!
At the bargaining table today, FAM-L reached three more Tentative Agreements (TAs): Management Rights, Association Rights, and Individual and Departmental Purchasing Cards. Together these assure greater clarity, transparency, and efficiency, a win-win for FAM and the University.
We spoke strongly to management about academic freedom for librarians, which management is still refusing to consider. Be sure to see our social media for our informative video series about why librarians need academic freedom and why faculty need librarians to have academic freedom! FAM faculty and librarians stand united on the absolute necessity for the university to recognize the academic freedom of all who teach, research, or do service at Miami.
The teams also came to agreement on a set of criteria for the service and scholarship required for promotion. The criteria will become part of a larger package on promotion and continuing contract for librarians.
Help us to close this contract once and for all!

Wondering where our typical lead librarian negotiator and science librarian, Ginny Boehme, is today? She’s in the Galápagos Islands and Ecuador, researching birds and bats! Faculty and librarians need academic freedom to study the whole range of science, evolution, and biology, and this is a great example. Here’s a blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) she photographed:
