Now more than ever, we must stand together as a union. Across the country and state, we see attacks on workers’ rights, rising costs of living, and corporate interests trying to weaken the very organizations that fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect on the job. We see legislative and executive attacks on education and on the most vulnerable members of our campus and community. But here’s the truth: when we stand together, we win.
Those in power are trying to use shock and awe tactics to create fear, confusion, and hopelessness. They hope we will comply voluntarily and in advance to hate-filled directives that sow division among communities. We must recommit to caring for each other and protecting our colleagues, students, and community. And, importantly, we must not obey in advance. We protect us. Power is only won back for the people by solidarity and collective action.
Our union is more than a contract—it’s a collective voice that ensures we are treated with dignity, that our work is valued, and that we have a say in our future. It’s a shield against unfair treatment, a force for better pay and benefits, and a movement to improve not just our workplaces, but our communities.
In this political climate, where education and worker protections are under constant threat, unions are the last line of defense. We won’t back down. We know that our strength comes from our solidarity, our commitment to one another, and our willingness to fight for what we deserve.
First, let’s close our contract so that protections are in place: job security, benefits guarantees, and codified compensation gains. Together, we can use this foundation to strengthen protections and fight for our students, colleagues, and communities into the future. Together with our national affiliates, the AAUP and the AFT, who are already fighting, we stand together against these threats.
