In today’s faculty bargaining session, FAM shared proposals on Benefits; Appointment and Promotion of Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty; Appointment, Renewal, and Promotion of TCPL Faculty; Shared Governance; Labor Management Meetings; Management Rights; and Separability. Management made some encouraging movement toward our position in an economic package that included Compensation, Professional Development Leaves and Appointments, Leaves, and Benefits. However, they continue to offer far too little in Compensation (including leaving our members entirely at the whim of the Board of Trustees for raises in the third year of the contract), and they want to make unilateral changes to your benefits without FAM’s input.
We also continue to fight for protections regarding Artificial Intelligence in our proposal, which simply asks management to commit to three eminently reasonable things:
- Don’t replace faculty with AI.
- Don’t evaluate or monitor faculty using AI.
- Notify us of any planned use of AI in instruction.
Any higher education institution that is not prepared to agree to the above does not deserve to be considered a “public ivy” or an R1 institution, period. From the Pope to AFT President Randi Weingarten, people are doubling down on human intelligence as a key value of the future. We are still working to hold management accountable to paying faculty teaching in the first summer term who expected to be paid in May and June (not June and July). We will keep you posted as soon as we have any news on this front.
