Karen Zaino
Statement: As a FAM liaison for the last two years, I have worked hard to facilitate clear communication between FAM’s leadership and FAM members in TCE and in EHS more broadly. In this capacity, I have supported voting and recruitment efforts, maintained communication between members and FAM leadership, and worked to build power with new and existing members. This has meant, on the one hand, providing regular updates to members about the status of bargaining and raising awareness around events and issues. Importantly, I have also tried to represent the interests of FAM members and to address questions when they are posed to me. I have looked into issues such as outside audits and their impact on our jobs; summer workload; and course scheduling questions. Even when the issues at hand are not necessarily part of our contract language, I have worked with members to brainstorm possible next steps and act accordingly. I aim for transparency and clarity, and seek to represent all member concerns that come my way. I hope to continue these responsibilities as your FAM representative!
Bio: I am a proud member of FAM and a current liaison for members from the Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry in the College of Education, Health and Society. I arrived at Miami as a Visiting Instructor, and have served as an Assistant Teaching Professor (TCPL) for the last two years. I became involved in FAM’s organizing efforts while visiting, and for the entirety of my time as full-time faculty, I have acted as a liaison for members. Prior to my time at Miami, I was an active member of the Professional Staff Congress at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC. Moreover, as a high school teacher in Kentucky during the 2017-18 school year, I participated in “Red for Ed” actions for public education. In short, I am a longtime supporter of education-related labor efforts and am eager to continue my work with FAM!
