    First Day of Bargaining!

Today, our faculty-librarian negotiating team sat at a long table across from two outside lawyers, a couple of lawyers from the Miami General Counsel office, and three deans from 10am till almost 7pm on the VoA campus. We had a collegial discussion and reached agreement on several items. Much remains to discuss! We can tell…

    A Great Day for Miami

Great news! With support from a strong majority of Miami faculty, the Faculty Alliance of Miami (FAM) is thrilled to announce that we have filed to form a union with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). On Friday, June 3rd, we submitted a petition for certification with the Ohio State Employment Relations Board (SERB).…

  • Miami Faculty are Forming a Union!

Individually, faculty lack the power to change the current situation. But here’s the good news: together, you and your colleagues can change the balance. And an overwhelming majority of you told us you strongly support organizing a union! The time has come to join the 10 unionized public universities in Ohio–and to fight to save…

Fall Update: The Pandemic Continues, Our Power Grows

Happy Labor Day, Miami colleagues! During this global pandemic and the unprecedented degradation in working and educational conditions in 2020- 2021, your Miami AAUP chapter has redoubled its efforts to assure high-quality education and faculty welfare, support academic freedom, advance the economic and professional status of the entire faculty, and represent an independent faculty voice…

Faculty: Voted 95% In Favor Of Improving Shared Governance. Provost & Board: Claim Miami “Exceeds” Shared Governance Norms

Back in Fall of 2020, 95% of faculty voted to support the AAUP’s two-part Faculty Assembly Resolution on Shared Governance. Sadly, the Board of Trustees has now declined to take action on either of the Resolution’s requests to improve shared governance. It first refused to support adding faculty as nonvoting members. Now, it has decided…

Statement on Miami’s COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

We appreciate that Miami University has followed other Ohio colleges and universities by mandating COVID-19 vaccination for all students and employees. A successful academic year will be impossible if we cannot protect the health of our students, staff, faculty, and community. The most effective way to protect against severe illness is by vaccinating all members…

  • Watch That Exec Tree Grow!

    Watch That Exec Tree Grow!

The Dean of Miami’s Regional campuses has become our newest Vice-President at Miami. Let’s celebrate the occasion by playing a fun game: “Watch That Exec Tree Grow!” Watch for yourself: Since 2017-2018, Miami’s high-paid executive cabinet has almost doubled. Back in 2017, Miami had six vice-presidents. In 2021, we have 11. The lower chart (2020-2021)…

  • Masks to be required at Miami

Masks to be required at Miami

Many Miami faculty, staff and students are breathing a sigh of relief this morning. President Crawford has announced that masks will be required indoors as of August 9. This will significantly increase the safety of our community. As a community leader, it is important that Miami University models care for our community and science-based decision-making.…

  • COVID safety email from Miami leadership misleads

COVID safety email from Miami leadership misleads

Today’s COVID safety email from Miami’s Provost states that “all Ohio universities are following [Ohio’s vaccine requirement] prohibition.”  This is misleading. At least one university is both following the law AND requiring vaccines. Cleveland State University’s website clearly states that CSU is requiring vaccination (with reasonable exceptions) for students in dorms: “Vaccination or documentation of…
